As a couple, Chip and Joanna Gaines have shown us that they are great at fixing up the homes of other people. In their HGTV show Fixer Upper, they always manage to give strangers an incredible home makeover. But what is it like when they have to work on the place that they call home? It makes sense that their fans would be naturally curious to see what it looked like. On top of that, they had expectations of the couple. The husband and wife spent 18 months working on the farmhouse in an effort to make it suitable for habitation. But was all the effort worth it? Let us find out!

Best Known For Home Renovations
The couple is most famous for their incredible home makeovers, but their story is also incredible! Chip and Joanna Gaines grew up in the same state and studied at the same college. However, they were three years apart and did not meet in their youth. They only crossed paths in 2001. When Chip noticed her in a photograph hanging in her dad’s shop, he was drawn to her. It turned out that she was the woman of his dreams! They eventually got together and then got hitched in 2003. Even in those days, they were thinking of crafting a place to call their home.

A Small And Modest Farmhouse
In 2012, Chip and Joanna purchased a farmhouse. It was a pretty modest place, to say the least. It was just a small two-bedroom thing that had an attic and needed some work. There was some confusion because it did not look like it was going to fit their family of seven. In reality, they did not care about the size of the house. The main reason they bought it was the size of the property. There were gorgeous oak trees around the house that added appeal to the entire place. The couple had been aware that they would need to patch up the farmhouse, but they did not mind. But could they really turn a small place into something suitable for seven people?

Their Commitment To This Project
We wonder if they knew how much time it was going to take them. They only finished working on the farmhouse after 18 months! It was a huge project on its own, but they also had to juggle other renovations. As the couple fixed up this farmhouse, they discovered interesting gems like paperwork from 1895. They did not know how old it was, but Joanna liked how much character the place had! She was thrilled to think that the house has a story of its own.

Their Commitment To This Project
Ready To Go
In October 2013, the entire Gaines family could finally move into the farmhouse! This was one year and a half after they started to work on it. Among other things, Joanna was focused on ensuring that the old house would not lose its character. This involved only adding a single extended structure to it, which went on to become the master bedroom. Joanna was able to brighten up the place with the use of various accent pieces and fixtures.

Natural Color Scheme
When it comes to the color scheme, Chip and Joanna went with neutral colors. If you read her blog, you are going to learn about the details of the home renovation. The two of them were able to keep the classic and timeless look of the home exterior. Aside from that, they gave it a white finish that suited the wooden beams. The oak trees around the farmhouse also made the little house also added to the effect.

Natural Color Scheme
On The Inside
Inside the house, they decided to use neutral colors as well. The gorgeous double doors will welcome you into a bright and spacious entrance hall. Thanks to the white and grey palette, this area looks very airy. It was not a surprise to see that it looked gorgeous both on the inside and outside. After all, Joanna has already shown us what she can do time and again! The décor was tasteful and true to their vision. She must have chosen everything, from the script wall-art to the coat rack, with great care.

The Flow Of The Design
It was very important to make the design of the house flow seamlessly. They were careful not to use too much detail. Chip and Joanna even knocked down a couple of walls to restructure the home. The kitchen is one of the most important parts of the house. The couple made sure to design to reflect that. They used white tiling to go with the white ceiling and then black accent pieces. It was a great way to add some contrast in this part of the house. The breakfast bar also comes in handy during meals.

The Other End
On the other side of the kitchen, you are going to find a diner and a lounge. This multi-purpose room shows us how well they planned the interior space. There is a dining table that is big enough to accommodate the entire family. Meanwhile, the couch is great when it is time to destress and relax. The accessories were chosen to go with their design plan. Is there anything out of place in this part of the house? We don’t think so. You might want to check out Magnolia Market if you like the decorative pieces that she used here. This is where she sells accessories and furnishings!

The Other End
A Place For Relaxation
Take a good look at this lounge! We appreciate how relaxing this part of the house is. It is important to set aside a part of the house for relaxation. That is especially true when you are the parents of five children. This is a functional space that is still full of charm. It shows us how talented the couple is!

A Place For Relaxation
The Minor Details
Chip and Joanna have added a number of details to the house to ensure that everything goes well together. There are those accent lamps and vase of flowers, for example. If you want the same things in your home, head onto the Magnolia Market. It exists as both an online and brick-and-mortar shop. This is how Joanna gets to share her eye for design with the rest of the world!

The Minor Details
The Master Bedroom
The couple only added one extension to the farmhouse, which they turned into the master bedroom. However, they also repaired and renovated the house as needed. Joanna looked for old doors to use since she wanted to give the place a classic look. In the master bedroom, she also used the attic flooring to further enhance its rustic charm. Despite this, our favorite part of this room is the bed!

The Master Bedroom
How To Unwind
As you can imagine, the couple tends to be busy. They manage several businesses and appear in front of the cameras. Aside from their jobs, they also raise five children on their own. It is amazing that they can juggle all of their responsibilities! Every now and then, they get to relax and let loose. Chip and Joanna like to spend their free time in the room in this photo. When winter rolls in, the couple likes to start a fire in the fireplace to stay warm and cozy.

How To Unwind
Their En Suite Bathroom
The master bedroom comes with an en suite bathroom. As expected, it is equally gorgeous! Among other things, there is a free-standing bathtub in there. The bathroom door is already a gorgeous accent piece on its own! We are glad that Joanna put in the effort to search for old doors. Her hard work has clearly paid off. On top of that, the black lanterns add more mystery to this part of the house.

Their En Suite Bathroom
From The Inside
Here is what it looks like from the inside. The master bathroom has two sinks, one for Chip and one for Joanna. There is also a gorgeous chandelier hanging from the ceiling. As you can see, Chip and Joanna remained dedicated to the neutral color scheme so that it would go with the design plan. It is important to make the bathroom as comfortable as possible! It goes without saying that they succeeded in doing that.

No Pink For The Girls
Chip and Joanna are the parents of two young girls: 10-year old Emmie Kay and 14-year-old Emmie Kay. Their parents were focused on giving them the best possible room. They did not make the mistake of using a lot of pink for the girl’s room. Joanna went with neutral colors once more. It was primarily white, but the gorgeous accent pieces gave the room more character. Check out that dollhouse!

No Pink For The Girls
One For The Boys
The same goes for the three boys. The youngest among their children would be Crew, who Joanna delivered in June 2018. It is awesome to see that there is a boy-girl-boy pattern! Drake is the eldest child at 15 years old, while Duke is 12 years old. Their room follows an adventure theme and comes with enough room for playtime. There is an extra bed in the room, which might mean that the couple is considering another son. If that is not the case, we are sure that it comes in handy during sleepovers.

One For The Boys
An Adventure Theme
The boys will never be bored in their room because there are so many things that they can do there! Their parents installed a wall map, which adds a sense of adventure. They also added ladders that they can climb so that the kids can channel their physical energy there. Chip and Joanna still used the neutral color palette for the room! As you can see, they really wanted to use this theme for the whole house.

An Adventure Theme
Family Above Everything Else
Chip and Joanna just wanted to make their home comfy and peaceful for the whole family. They were also concerned about making it look good, but the children had been their top priority. If you go through her social media pages, you will see how much she dotes on the kids. She fills her Instagram page with family photos. It is clear that she likes to go on trips and spend quality time with the family. If you ever visit their home, you are going to see photos of them on the walls. They decided to print them in black and white to go with the color scheme of the house. They thought about every single thing in advance!

Family Above Everything Else
Drinking Coffee Together
You are going to find a lot of eccentric pieces in their home. Among other things, you are going to find a coffee bar in there! We are sure that they do not usually go to the café since they can make amazing coffee in the comfort of their home. Chip and Joanna like to spend some time with each other as they sip and enjoy their cup of java. We are impressed that they own a fully stocked coffee bar in their own home!

Drinking Coffee Together
A Craft Space For The Kids
Considering how crafty their parents are, it was only natural for the children to be creative people themselves. Chip and Joanna want to encourage this, which is why they added a kiddie craft room. This is the perfect spot if they want to work on a creative project. It is located in the attic, which makes it ideal to get those creative juices flowing. The room is great for artsy projects, and it is the only place that looks pretty different from the rest of the house. We can see why they made this concession!

A Craft Space For The Kids
Joanna Has Her Own Crafts Room
Aside from the one for the kids, there is another artistic area in the house. This one is exclusively used by Joanna! It makes sense that she needs space to work on her projects. She likes to take on a number of exciting projects, but we already know that. She designs homes and creates products for Magnolia Market in this room. Isn’t it exciting to think of all the plans that she probably comes up with here?

Plenty Of Outdoor Space
This is what the farmhouse looks like from the outside. Over here, the family gets to entertain visitors or host get-togethers with their loved ones. This is a great way to use the abundance of outdoor space on their property! We are sure that they like to spend quality time with each other over here as well. There seems to be a repurposed barn and fire pit that opens up even more possibilities! It must be nice to have their meals in this spot. We love how elegant and full of character this area is. But then again, this can be said about any nook and cranny of the house!

Plenty Of Outdoor Space
Their Very Own Farm
The farmhouse is lying on top of 40 acres of land. Joanna and Chip want to use the land by adding trees and all kinds of plants there. Aside from the vegetation, they also want to have animals on the property. This is the perfect place for a farm! In fact, they installed a silo and a chicken coop on the land as soon as they could. They were in love with the traditional charm of the house and the natural beauty of the land.

Their Very Own Farm
The Greenhouse On Their Land
Joanna and Chip also have a greenhouse of their own. This is one of the most striking and unusual things about the outdoor area. It allows the family to grow any plant that they want no matter what time of the year it is. They can grow plants, herbs, and even veggies. We wonder if the kids have also learned how to appreciate the joys of gardening! This would be the perfect opportunity to teach them that.

Hanging Out On The Porch
When the evenings are warm, the Gaines family probably likes to spend some time on the porch. It has retained the original style of the farmhouse. Let us admire this photo of Joanna as she relaxes with her youngest kid. We bet that it is peaceful to simply stare at their yard and take in all the natural beauty.

Wall Art Wisdom
In terms of decorations, Joanna and Chip also decided to put up word art. They wanted to express the things that they believe in through this. In the entrance hall, they put up this piece to show what they think about the house. We are glad that they decided to fill the house with as much personality and zest as they could. It feels much cozier this way! Luckily, they did not go for the antiseptic look.

It Is Now Their Home
Joanna and Chip put their family at the top of their priority list. This is the reason they worked so hard on transforming this small farmhouse into a livable home. They even put in the effort to personalize the entire place as much as they possibly could. In the end, their hard work had been worth it. After all, this is now the place that they call home! It is time for them to fill it with beautiful memories.

It Is Now Their Home
Their Work Stations
Like many people, Joanna and Chip occasionally have to work from home. In the age of coronavirus, we are sure that they are happy that they set up workplaces in various areas of the house. There is a desk in nearly every room so that they can work whenever the inspiration hits. While there are plenty of work spots, they ensure that there is more than enough space to enjoy some bonding time with the kids.

Staying Warm In The Winter
Texas is famously hot in the summer. However, people tend to underestimate how cold it can get in the winter. Chip and Joanna made sure to get ready for this eventuality. They did not remove the original fireplace that came with the farmhouse and simply added charming details to it. How beautiful is that?

Staying Warm In The Winter
The Perfect Garden
They might have the greenhouse, but Joanna also wanted to have her very own garden. We can just tell that the Gaines family likes the outdoors. This garden was designed to add beauty to the outdoor area. They also installed the surrounding fence to keep unwanted animals out so that they would not destroy the plants. It is a great way to prevent the kids from getting lost as well.

The Perfect Garden
A Gorgeous And Spotless Kitchen
Joanna and Chip also made sure that the kitchen was going to come equipped with all the features you can imagine. They decorated this place in a way that suits the design of the house. We love the fun little “supermarket” sign above the window! It looks both pleasant and functional, which is the ideal way to describe a room like this one. We also love the fact that the kitchen looks pristine and spotless.

Everything Has Its Own Spot
When you have a lot of kids, it must be tiring to constantly pick up after them. It was a good thing that they planned ahead by assigning spots for certain things. This is ideal if you want to keep your home as organized as possible. Chip and Joanna made sure that everything would have a place in the farmhouse.

They Thought Of Playtime As Well
Playtime can be a nightmare when you have five kids in the house. This is another thing that Chip and Joanna considered when they worked on the renovation. This photo shows one of the kids making card houses on the stairs! It shows that the couple likes to encourage their hobbies and interests no matter what it might be. The Gaines kids are so lucky that they have such thoughtful parents.

These Comfy Nooks
As you can see, Joanna and Chip did not overlook even a single detail. They were dedicated to making this the most comfortable and conducive house for the entire family. We love these adorable nooks that would be perfect for a nap in the middle of the day. As you can see, the kids also like to use it when they want to read. It is so delightful to see how comfortable everyone seems to be in this farmhouse.

The Result Of The Renovation
This shows the same house before and after Joanna and Chip finished the renovation project. Can you believe how different it looks? Even though the couple made a lot of changes, we daresay that it still retains the spirit of the original. On top of that, they did everything in their power to fashion a cozy house for the kids and themselves. They have made their dream home a reality! It took them 18 months to accomplish their goal, but the most important thing is that they got there in the end.

A Great Team
Joanna and Chip now have a space that they can call home. When they are in their farmhouse, they have nothing to worry about. Who would have thought that they would be able to transform such an old house into a comfortable place? The design also makes it easy on the eyes. Their success with this project only goes to show just how talented the husband and wife are. Even though their fans had high expectations of them, they passed with flying colors!

What The Future Holds
People are interested to hear if the Gaines plan to have more kids since it feels like the family never stops growing. If that happens, are they going to move to a different place and sell this farmhouse? Just so you know, Joanna and Chip have explained that they are currently happy with the state of things. They do not intend to sell the property since they want to raise their kids there. We are glad to hear that the children like the farmhouse too! It is a relief to hear that this is the case but only time will tell if they are really going to hold onto it. We sure hope that they do.
