He Was Totally Surprised When He Discovered The Source Of The Strange Noises In His Driveway

Published on 11/14/2020

His day could not really get much worse, he thought, although it could, apparently. The night prior, he was unable to get a good night’s rest due to the unwanted noise that he heard. Then this man put his knees on the parking lot to see what was going on underneath the car. As he was taking a good angle at the concrete, a horrifying noise astonished him. So what was going on beneath the driveway? When he bought and relocated into his new house, he had no idea that he was going to find anything of the kind!

What Was Making All The Weird Noises Below The Driveway Of His New Home?

His New Home

Entirely sure, what you are going to have when you buy a new residence is difficult to discern. That being said, Simon Marks couldn’t really help himself after finding a place to live in Luton for such a reasonable price. The 37-year-old man took care of every detail and transmitted the payment as soon as possible. At the time, he did not even question why the seller was planning to get rid of the property so abruptly.

It Was His First Night

A month or two, after all this, Simon started to disassemble his cartons. He was enthralled to stay at his new home for the first night. After spending a few days transferring his things to the new place, he went to sleep exhausted. After taking into consideration the travel time between both the house and the office, he was happy to set the alarm for 8 in the morning. As he was resting in the middle of the night, however, he then heard the loud noise.

Time To Investigate

He was breathing and holding it so that he can hear very well. Once again, there was a noise, and now he can tell you that it came from outside the residence. Beginning to sound like gravel on metal, the sound was muted and dull. He was intrigued by this disturbance, so he decided to stand up and looked at the garden from the window. He could not see anything that was trying to move. Everything was quiet once again, so he brushed it and went back to bed.

Discovery In The Driveway

The next day, he positioned his Vauxhall Zafira in the opposite direction. To his great shock, the vehicle did not return from the parking lot but rather slid forward! He tried once more. It began to look like something was being caught on the wheel. He revived the engine until his car leaped backward and sighed in relief. Following this, he ended up going out to take a good hard look at what had obstructed the front tire.

The Driveway Gave

Simon knelt down in order to have a better look at it. And it was when he noticed that the driveway pavers were broken. Not only that, but the driveway started giving in right before him! After hearing the snap, he jumped back as the concrete happened to come apart and crumbled into the land. It was only after the dust started to settle that he’d seen a very disturbing sight. In this place, what was going on?

It Should Not Be There

The elderly couple who used to reside there built the house throughout the ’70s, as far as he knew. This, being said, was evidently not a portion of the house’s project design! He did go down on his stomach and, having been convinced that his height could rest on the pavers, immediately started to crawl forward.  He had seen something that had caused him to pick up a trowel and start digging.

Beneath The Ground

Shortly enough, he decided to break into the dirt. A bulk of steel was uncovered hanging down from the soil! He used his hands to get rid of the dirt until he could grasp the item. Then, he pulled at it with all he had. However, the rusty thing would simply not budge regardless of how much strength he put into it. Then he dug around it until he was able to liberate it. As he saw more and more of it, he started to realize that this chunk of steel was attached to a larger item. What could that probably be?

What Was Hidden There

With pictures of the sinkhole trying to swallow up his car as the hole got larger, his heart actually started to race. Even worse, what if it were to sink the whole house into this strange empty space? After trying to work some more on the hole, he saw what looked like a human-made item beneath everything. This was when he began to realize that things were even more sinister than he assumed. He pulled his phone out and called for support.

Gerald, his father, hurried to the incident. Without any equipment or professional tools, they started to work on the hole. They managed carefully to get rid of the concrete crack enveloping the piece of metal and found a shaped hole down there. A rusty ladder could be seen descending into the darkness! They really made them feel uncomfortable. Why is there a secret passageway under the driveway? Where it would go, they wondered. In the end, they only had one way of getting the answers to all the questions.

They Went Even Deeper

Simon made sure to do his homework before he bought that old house. Of course, it really was his responsibility to find out just what he was about to get into. He knew that the ordinances’ survey results would not help to unravel this hidden tunnel’s strangeness. The data said before the construction of the house; it was all empty land. A shiver went down his spine as the pair began digging deep.

Going Down

The dirt was so densely packed that it had to be dumped in containers by the two of them. As the hours went by, the bucket of dirt just kept exponentially growing. In the end, it was possible to excavate about 5 feet of soil, which gave them adequate space just to use the latter. The time has finally come to begin to investigate! What did they find down there anyway?

It Had Hidden Rooms

Simon began to make his way down the tunnel, and he felt very strange once he was halfway through. He didn’t want any additional discovery. After all, maybe it’s not safe! To get the selfie stick, he returned to the house. After affixing his phone to it, he went down into the hole. He was able to see on the mobile screen that the underground passage had two rooms. Gerald had a conclusion as to what they were looking at, but it was vital to verify everything first.

The Secret Beneath The House

Simon decided to buy this house because of the remarkably good cost of half a million bucks. However, that said, it turned out that the land had been in use for a different reason before the house stood there. Though the first owner of the house was the older gentleman from whom he bought it, he decided not to tell Simon of the great revelation lying beneath the residence. In fact, the sound he heard the evening before was the soil that gave way under the concrete as it fell into the secret bunker.

A Strategic Location

After doing some research on the property, Simon, as well as his father, instructed the digging to be delayed. The plot number was inspected, which helped them understand what was happening swiftly, too. Prior to the elderly couple, the plot of land was unoccupied. But Gerald merely pointed out that it was located in a perfectly tactical location in the city. What gave them a concept in the end, though, was the time frame when the house was built.

Doing Their Research

“My dad saw it and instantly said it’s an air raid shelter,” Simon shared. “We googled it and found there are quite a few in this area.” They did further study about it, and he later discovered that it was indeed a refugee camp built during the Second World War. He said to the reporters, “The previous owner must have known it was there and when he built the house and put a garden in… he must have filled it in.”

A Man Called Sir John Anderson

In 1938, at the beginning of the Second World War, it was important to give the job of preparing people for war to a man named Sir John Anderson. Remember, this wasn’t an easy path to take. His duty was to devise a strategy that would protect the citizens of Britain from the bomb blasts and attacks that were sure to arrive. That’s why he decided to create a plan to make sure that innocent civilians would be protected.

Building Backyard Shelters

Sir John Anderson, together with a group of engineers, organized and assisted groups of people with the development of simple bomb shelters in the backyard. It was essential for these bomb shelters to stay close to the house so that they could pull back at any specific time. The walls of the structure were constructed of a versatile yet lightweight metal that was better than concrete. Overall, there have been over two million such bomb shelters built around the country. However, that’s not what Simon uncovered!

The Design Was Different

By taking a good look at the chamber, Gerald seemed to be able to tell that it was not a Sir John Anderson-designed bomb shelter. However, it was absolutely accurate that the structure was built sometime between 1938. The bombing that took place near Luton was pretty close to that. Residents in the area felt scared after having to learn that the tiny town became a target. The vast majority of them would like to assure that they will be protected, no matter what.

The community worked together to make a strategy for the public to establish a shelter. It was necessary for the local residents to ensure they could have something that would withstand air raids. Gerald knew that it wasn’t the standard Anderson style bunker because it did come with two rooms. It used, on top of that, concrete and bricks. As Gerald and Simon delved deeper, they also identified several artifacts!

Finding Artifacts

The duo discovered a domestic paper clip in one of the rooms in the passageway. The Herald newspaper was published during the Second World War. One news article stated, “Is this the end of Luton Airport?” But then, on the other hand, the articles discussed daily life in the middle of the battle. The artifact supplied them with the chance to take a look at what it was like to reside in Britain during the war. What else did they encounter down there?

It Was Made By Hand

The pair also ended up finding proof that a lot of water, as well as food, had previously been contained down there. People actually wanted food and water if they had to keep hiding under the ground, after all. They may well have been locked away for days or weeks in shelters. When Simon was questioned, he said,  “It’s incredible to think it has all been made by hand.”

The Materials Used

In the bomb shelter, there were concrete walls that have been enhanced with brick and mortar. This attempted to give it a shield that would safeguard it from the bombing. Although Gerald, as well as Simon, had already found a wonderful discovery, it was not yet the end of it. “It’s been a case of the dig, dig, dig. We’re about five feet down at the moment, so it’s just another five feet to go until it’s finished. I think we’re going to have to get a skip in because there’s so much rubbish to get rid of,” Simon added.

That Was Not All

“One of the walls has been bricked up. I’m 90 percent sure we won’t find out any more rooms, but we don’t know. They might have bricked up one of the walls when the house was built to make way for the foundations,” he mentioned to the reporters. He also stated, “If that’s the case, we’ll just have to leave it.” After some time, the story reached a lot of people.

The Arrival Of Reporters

When Simon and Gerald dug deep into the place, neighbors, as well as news reporters, crowded at the front parking lot. All of them really want to see such an unbelievable discovery. Even so, Simon didn’t care about the media exposure he was getting after uncovering something so important in his own residence. No, he was more concerned about something different in general.  He didn’t spend hours trying to dig for international fame!

An Incredible Part Of History

Simon genuinely believed that it was extremely important for everybody to know more about shelter.  He simply began to feel as if it was his responsibility to put a spotlight on the history of the country. It would’ve been a huge shame if this part of history was forgotten. He would like the air-raid shelter for subsequent generations to be preserved.

Simon and Gerald now intend to work on and preserve it. They as well wish that as a historic and meaningful monument, the shelter will be proclaimed. The duo seems to think that we must never neglect this just because the war has been waged for decades. They hope that new generations will be able to go to the shelter and gain knowledge about such a vital period.
