It Was The Best Day Out At Sea For These Fishermen But They Abandoned Their Plans To Save This Creature

Published on 08/21/2019

This is a story about a trio of fishermen who made a discovery that shocked them, pushed them to their limits, and tested the strength of their friendships. It started out like any other fishing day for them, although it eventually turned into a rescue mission when they found something on an iceberg. What you are about to read will show you just how good humans can be when the situation calls for it. We hope you are ready to feel better about the state of the world. It is not often that you hear about people risking their lives to do the right thing.

The Trio

Cliff Russel, Allen Russel, and Mallory Harrigan are close friends who like to go fishing as a group. It made complete sense for them to convert their beloved hobby into a proper business. They pooled money to buy a fishing boat and found a fishing company.

The Trio

The Trio

One Boat

It was only a small operation since they only had three people on the team and a single boat. However, they liked what they did. They come from Canada, so there were many good fishing areas nearby. It worked to their advantage that they were familiar with the market and the seasons, of course.

However, these three had no idea what was waiting for them out there every time they sailed out. They never expected things to be easy, although what they experienced on this fateful day was nothing like they have ever seen before.

Fishing Lifestyle

You might not know just how demanding it is to be a fisherman. If you fish for a living, it is important to get up early to prepare and plan the day. When they reach the fishing area, they also tend to use up a lot of time and energy to make sure they bring home a huge catch. The three of them have gotten used to this after doing this on a daily basis. Even though it was hard, they liked to be out on the water.

Fishing Lifestyle

Built On Friendship

Fishing is a very serious business, one that might even test the limits of strong friendships. If they did not deal with issues properly, it could spell the end of the friendship they forged over the years. It was a good thing that Cliff, Allen, and Mallory always sorted out their business plans and stayed good friends no matter what. In fact, they have only gotten closer after they started working on the company.

Job Duties

The job involves spending long, arduous hours out on the water. They normally returned to the dock in the evening. On top of that, it was common to earn bumps, bruises, and injuries. Even though it might sound hard, they did not mind because they enjoyed what they did.

Screenshot 20

Hard At Work

Not a single one of them ever voiced out complaints about the hardships they went through during these fishing trips. It did not even cross their minds to quit at any point. They loved each other, and they felt motivated by the work they do every single day. As you can see, everything was worth it for these fishermen.

Morning

The story begins when Mallory, Allen, and Cliff set out one morning for yet another day on the water. These crab fishermen live in Labrador, Canada. They took out their boat as they did on any other workday.

One Fine Day

This was a day that was going to change their lives forever. However, they had no idea this was the case at the time. They all prepped for a day on the water once more. Mallory even had a good feeling about this day. Despite this, nothing could have prepared her for what they were going to see.

Just Like Any Other Day

She got up even earlier than she usually did. Mallory went about the boat preparation right away even though her two friends were not around just yet. She was in a motivated and cheerful mood at the time.

Lists

Once all three of them were present, they started to go through the list of things they had to do before they could get to work. They came up with this checklist to make sure that they were fully prepared for the fishing trip ahead of them. If an emergency happens, they would have the tools they need on hand.

Screenshot 16

Lists

Preparation

If there was anything on the list that they failed to do, it usually meant that it was going to be an even longer day at work. They usually needed to return to the dock to get whatever it was they left behind. They did not want such a thing to happen, so they made sure everything was already in order.

Heading Out To The Sea

Can you believe that the boat preparation was normally the easiest part of the workday? Mallory, Allen, and Cliff often shared stories and goofed around to pass the time. Even though they have known one another for a long time, there was always something they can discuss.

A New Day

This was what a regular morning looked like for them. If you were an outsider watching them, you might think that they are old friends who had not seen each other for a long time! The three took their jobs seriously but never forgot to chat and laugh together as well. As you can see, they did not have a clue that something shocking was going to happen later that day.

A New Day

The Calm Before The Storm

This might be what they call the “calm” before the storm. As a matter of fact, the water itself had been very clear that day as well. They took the boat to a great crabbing spot off the coast. It was a couple of miles away from there, but they knew that there was a good chance they would get a good catch there.

Dropping Their Baskets

As soon as they got to the spot they desired, they shut down the boat’s engine and remained there. This area was a tried and tested spot for catching crabs, so they hoped they would get lucky here. They took a lot of care into setting up the crab pots before they threw them onto the ocean. Hopefully, they landed in an area where there were plenty of the crustaceans. After this, the only thing to do was wait.

Dropping Baskets

Record-Breaking Year

They had to sit and let the cages be lugged around all over the ocean floor for quite some time. Ideally, this would let the crabs enter the traps while they attempted to get the bait. Even though the end of the crab season was approaching, they remained hopeful that they could say goodbye to it with a bang.

Screenshot 23

Record-Breaking Year

Out Of Luck

In the weeks leading up to that day, they had great luck with crabs. They pulled them in one after another. However, they knew that it was possible that they had used up all their luck already. This year had been especially great, so they kept their fingers crossed that it was going to be a good day.

Omen In Crabs

Mallory, Cliff, and Allen distributed the workload by putting one person in charge of the steering wheel as the others worked on the lines to ensure that none of them got tangled. This was the usual routine for them, so they knew it by heart. They did not have any problems with this. What was next for them?

Best Day

Soon enough, it was time for them to pull out the crab cages. They were stunned by what they found. Who would have thought that it was going to be their best day so far?! They celebrated their luck and dragged their catch aboard the boat. They then returned the cages into the water and waited again.

As they kept working over the course of the day, they kept getting more crabs there! It was shaping up to be a record-breaking day! The crew finished their work in the first spot and decided to move somewhere else. They hoped that their luck would carry over in the icier region. They ventured farther out there, although this meant it was going to riskier as well.

Dangerous Waters

You would not see any birds this far out into the sea either. However, everything seemed calm and peaceful to them. Who would have thought that this was not the truth, after all? The seals hanging out by the icebergs also knew that dangers lie at every corner.

Screenshot 25

Dangerous Waters

One Wrong Turn

There are a lot of icebergs floating around the Labrador Sea. While beautiful, it also meant that it would be dangerous to travel there for even the most skilled seamen. If a fisherman took the wrong turn, it might be the end for them.

Something Up Ahead

Allen had been posted to lookout duty, which is why he had been the one to spot the huge iceberg in their way. As he navigated them around this massive chunk of ice, his eye fell on something. Even though there was nothing unusual about seeing an iceberg, there was something different about this.

Screenshot 24

Something Up Ahead

Something Off

The sun had been unusually bright on this particular day, so they did not have an easy time looking at this huge thing in their way. When Mallory and Cliff checked out what Allen saw, they also noticed that there was something strange about the iceberg. However, they could not put a finger on what it was.

The Iceberg Appears!

They got closer and closer to the iceberg, which let them have a better view of what was right in front of the boat. The three noticed a dark spot right on top of this iceberg, but it was still too far for them to see what it was. Mallory thought it was only a seal basking in the sunlight. However, this did not sound right.

Taking A Closer Look

Cliff had been with Mallory on this one. There was nothing strange about seeing a seal on top of an iceberg. As a matter of fact, they saw the same thing many times in the past few years. However, Allen was not convinced. He could tell that something was strange about the whole thing.

What Could It Be?

After using his binoculars to look at the animal. He let the crew know that he suspected that it was actually another creature. It did not seem like a seal to him because it was moving in a different way. Mallory and Cliff observed it some more and eventually agreed with him. Could Allen be onto something here? There was only one way to know for sure.

Getting Closer

Even though they had initially planned to spend the rest of the day fishing, they decided it was worth taking a closer look at the creature on top of the iceberg. They were all curious by then. If they wanted to find out what this animal was, they needed to approach it. The temperature was falling and the wind was blowing harder as they inched closer to it.

The Investigation

They knew the risks that came with taking a different route from their usual path. However, Allen convinced them that this was the right thing to do. It was a good thing that he trusted his instinct.

Approaching

All three of them wanted to find out what this animal was. Even though Mallory and Cliff did not think it was an urgent situation, Allen felt differently. He did not want to let an animal suffer out in the cold. After all, there was a chance it would die there if they did not help. They made up their minds.

Chilling Temperatures

It soon became clear to them that this creature was stranded where it was. On top of that, it had fur and was soaked through the bone! With the way the wind was blowing, they knew the creature did not stand a chance against the cold. It was then that they decided they would do everything they could to help it out. While they did not know what the animal was, they knew they wanted to get it out of there.

Screenshot 2

Chilling Temperatures

Advance Slowly

It was important for them to take it slowly as they approached the iceberg. If even one piece of ice went under the boat, the boat might suffer some damage or even capsize completely. They did not want to get stranded there because it would spell doom for both them and the animal. This is the reason they made sure to approach with as much caution as possible.

Careful

Constant Watch

What made the situation even more dire for them was that the waves began to climb higher and higher! The movement of the boat got more precarious, so Mallory asked her friends to be even more careful. They were all curious and excited as they approached the iceberg. However, not once did they forget to act carefully. The other crewmembers kept an eye out for any potential dangers.

Sadly, the wind began to pick up. It got stronger and so did the waves! Both the boat and the iceberg were now rocking. The crew was used to dealing with such difficult waves, although they now had to worry about the reaction of the animal atop the iceberg.

They were worried about more than the ice blocks in the waters now. Mallory knew that it was possible that the animal was going to get so scared that it would panic and jump into the icy water. She might be able to figure out a plan if only they could get a little closer.

The wind was blowing even harder, which meant the waves grew taller. The iceberg was also getting rocked farther away from where they were. Mallory, Cliff, and Allen were worried about the state of their boat and the animal they were trying to rescue.

Tricky Circumstances

If they wanted to stay close to the iceberg, they did not have any other choice than to go faster. It made it harder to navigate the waters. The dangerous situation became even riskier because nighttime was about to fall soon. It was important for them to return to the shore before the sunset.

Getting A Glimpse

As they got closer to the iceberg, the group managed to get a better look at the animal. From where they were, they saw that it bore a resemblance to a dog. While it came with four legs as well, they knew that they were not dealing with a domestic puppy in a place like this.

At any rate, the poor animal was shivering and soaking wet. The trio decided that it was their duty to save this helpless creature. They wanted to do everything they could to make sure that it did not freeze to death. Although they were aware that it could be dangerous, they were willing to risk it.

They went closer until they finally got close enough to see the creature clearly. As they stared at it, they figured out that it was an Arctic fox! They had no clue how it even got there. Not only was it cold and weak, but there were also birds flying above it. If they did not act soon, it might get eaten for lunch.

It seemed like the other animals in that area could tell just how close the poor creature was to death. They then arrived at a quick decision. They were going to rescue the fox and help it as much as they could. They decided to put off the fishing in the meantime. They tried to find a better solution, even if it meant that they were going to put themselves in danger as well.

However, this Arctic fox was not like your tamed house pet whatsoever. In fact, it tried to escape from their clutches! There was nowhere else to go since it was stranded on the iceberg. It only sat there and stared at the humans. The fox clearly did not want to make contact with them. What were they going to do about it now? Should they just leave it be?

They had settled down and waited for some time after settling down right beside the iceberg. It took a little while, but the fox finally took a step toward the boat! The Rescue

The fox approached their boat carefully and slowly. However, it must have been too weak to climb aboard the boat by itself. Allen then leaned over and scooped it up from the surface to bring it on board. At last, the fox was now on the boat! This did not mean it was all good now, however.

Back In The Water

Even though it was a lot safer aboard the boat, this fox felt alarmed by their presence. In its panic, it jumped into the water! As you can imagine, the fishermen all stared in horror as this tiny animal tried to conquer the icy waters to return to the iceberg. The fishermen did not want this to happen at all! They followed the fox with the boat until the poor creature got tired.

At that point, Allen only had to scoop it out of the water with care and then brought it aboard the boat once more. It still seemed scared as it tried to get away from them. The animal then retreated to a corner in its cold and wet state. The situation eventually got even worse than it already was.

Unanswered Questions

Keep in mind that the fur of the fox had gotten wet. While Allen and Cliff had towels prepared to warm and dry it up, they could not help but worry that it might attack them anytime. Just how long was it going to wait before it trusted them at last? Could it survive in its current state? They hoped that the fox would hang on until then.

It was important for them to warm the animal up before it could die of the cold. Mallory decided that she had to steer them back to the shore, although they were still far from land. Mallory was the one who made a brilliant suggestion to keep the animal warm. She thought that they could try making a nest for the fox. Allen and Cliff only found sawdust aboard the boat, however. Still, it might be enough to create a warm bed for this fox. They only needed to insulate some heat, after all.

They put the sawdust in a plastic bin. Hopefully, the fox would stay there for security and warmth instead. The fox then buried itself in the flakes of wood. They still had about half an hour of travel left when Cliff stepped in to take over the wheel. All of a sudden, the boat got hit by a wave. The force woke up the fox, who was panicked. It was tired and terrified. The trio decided to keep it calm by feeding it using some of the seafood they caught. They hoped that the animal was going to regain its strength after eating.

Mallory did not have much luck when she fed it from their catch. She then went to the galley and retried some Vienna sausages. After soaking the pieces in water, she offered them to the animal. She had a spot in mind. It seemed like the best place for them to release the fox. The location was not far from the docks either.
