There was once a man in upstate New York who took his wife to her doctor’s appointment but got a shock when he went back to pick her up. He waited patiently for her to finish, but he started to worry when she still did not come out after a few hours. Then, he decided to go inside the doctor’s office, but the receptionists told the man that his wife was nowhere in sight.
Nowhere In Sight
The man came back, as he had told his wife he would, and waited for her. However, she never showed up. Questions like why she did not show up and what happened to her remained unanswered – that is, until 42 years later, when the case was finally closed with the help of a photo and a word.

Nowhere In Sight
Nothing More Than A Cold
Earlier that day, the man did not sense anything unusual when he brought his wife to her appointment. She was suffering from a nasty head cold, so he took her to see the doctor. He told her he would be back in an hour, but things got weird.

Nothing More Than A Cold
Florence Stevens
The woman was Florence “Flora” Stevens, and her husband saw her for the last time on August 3, 1975. She was 36 years old at the time and full of life and adventure. Her disappearance that day was a really big mystery.

Florence Stevens
A Resort In The Catskills
In 1975, Flora had a job at a Catskill Mountain resort and worked there during the summer. The said resort was called The Concord, a grand resort which had 1,200 rooms and was really popular among tourists. It was the largest complex in the area.

Educated
When detectives looked into her job application, they found out that Flora was a former Lincoln High School student. The information on Flora was limited, but they knew her husband was Robert Stevens.

Opening The Case
Nobody knew where Flora had gone. When the investigation opened, many people helped search for her. Everybody was definitely puzzled by her strange disappearance. She was a very nice woman, yet no one knew where she was.

Opening The Case
The End Of The Road
Clues got less and less frequent. Flora had no known relatives who were living, so it was almost impossible to find answers for questions like where she was born and raised. At that point, it seemed like it was the end.

The End Of The Road
No One Could Have Known
The case eventually grew cold and nobody knew what had happened to Flora. Back then, they did not know that almost half a century later, someone would reopen the case.

No One Could Have Known
Senior Investigator Yan Salomon
In 2017, New York State Police Senior Investigator Yan Salomon came across something which would end up helping to solve a case that he was not even aware of.

Senior Investigator Yan Salomon
Looming Questions
Yan Salomon found something which helped the Florence “Flora” Stevens case! Her friends and those who followed the case had many questions. Where had she been all this time? Was she okay?

Looming Questions
Skeletal Remains
However, Senior Investigator Yan Salomon did not really have the best news. Yes, he found a woman, but he actually found skeletal remains. As a matter of fact, he needed help in identifying whose remains they were.

Skeletal Remains
Make Some Calls
The next thing that he did was make some calls. He decided to call the Sullivan County sheriff’s office so he could speak with a detective. Salomon explained to the detective that he found a woman’s remains near the Catskills. He then asked for help in identifying who the woman was.

Make Some Calls
Too Hard
In the U.S. alone, about 70,000 adult women are reported missing every year. It was practically impossible for Salomon to identify who the woman was on his own. Luckily, they came up with something clever.

Too Hard
Information At Their Disposal
As of January 2016, as many as 21,894 cases of missing women in the United States were active. However, records of cold cases are kept in storage and investigators can access these pieces of information.

Information At Their Disposal
Looking For Her
Salomon knew that it was going to be really hard to identify the body, so he got a team together who was going to check the numerous open cases to try to find similarities to the remains they found. This helped in identifying whose body they had found.

Looking For Her
Welcome To Sullivan County
While it was quite a long shot, Salomon still made a trip to Sullivan County and did his own research. He thought of doing local searches so that it would be easier to identify the woman and the investigation would be a bit simpler.

Welcome To Sullivan County
An Open Case
With his skills, Salomon speculated that the woman had been from the area. At that time, he thought that he needed to find answers to his questions. A while back, there was a case in Sullivan County which seemed to match his findings’ description.

An Open Case
Looking For Answers
Salomon was thinking of a particular woman who had gone missing, so he asked the detectives if he could see her case file. He did this so he could check for living relatives, not knowing there weren’t any.

Looking For Answers
It All Came Together
The file on the woman that had gone missing was old and it was opened in 1975. However, the file did not provide any information whatsoever, but it clicked for Salomon, who thought he finally uncovered the missing clue.

It All Came Together
New Information
Salomon decided to defer the case to Sullivan County detectives, so it got assigned to Detective Rich Morgan. The main task of the detective was finding out how the two women were connected. After he read the missing woman’s case file, they succeeded in digging up new information.

New Information
Connecting The Dots
Apparently, someone had found Flora Stevens’ work ID, which revealed she worked in the Catskill Mountains. The ID was found where the woman’s remains were discovered. Was it a simple coincidence?

In 1975, a woman by the name of Flora Stevens went missing. Prepare to be shocked as you are about to learn something fascinating about her case.

The Missing Woman
Detective Morgan managed to solve the puzzle. He found out that the cold case was connected to the remains of the woman, so he began an investigation into Flora Stevens.

The Missing Woman
Looked Far And Wide
When Flora disappeared, her spouse made the effort to search far and wide for her. He said he took her to her medical appointment and left her there, having agreed to meet later. However, she never showed up.

Looked Far And Wide
Another Dead End
From that moment on, an investigation was started. Sadly, no other information was found. Her husband died ten years after Flora disappeared – another dead end after the other.

Another Dead End
How Would He Do It?
Flora had no known living relatives whom Detective Morgan could talk to, so he knew solving her case would not be easy. He could not think of how he could prove this woman was the same one Yan Salomon found.

How Would He Do It?
Her Social Security Number
However, when Detective Morgan went through the databases, both local and national, he discovered something crucial. Flora Stevens’ social security number was being used by someone!

Her Social Security Number
250 Miles From There
The detective was able to track down the number just north of Boston. Shocked, he learned that an assisted living facility resident was using Flora Stevens’ – a missing person – social security number.

250 Miles From There
A Different Last Name
Detective Morgan made a call to the establishment. The staff said the social security number was being used by a Flora, though her last name was not Stevens. Her family name was Harris. She had been a resident there since 2001, apparently.

A Different Last Name
Identity Fraud
Together with another investigator, Detective Morgan went to the facility. They both could not believe what they found out. They had not expected this cold case to go this way…

Identity Fraud
Possible Identity Theft
When Detective Morgan spoke to CBS Boston, this is what he said: “Same first name, different last name, but same birth date and social security.” The investigators needed to speak with this person. They were wondering whether this was an identity theft case.

Possible Identity Theft
Just Her Photograph
To be safe, the investigators took with them the only available picture of Flora in the database – the photo on her ID when she worked at the Catskill Mountains. Their purpose for going to the facility was to talk to Flora. They also wanted to introduce themselves to her.

Just Her Photograph
Found Her
The woman at the facility did something which shocked the investigators. Detective Morgan recounted that she took the picture, pointed at it, and “She says that’s me, or me, she responded with one word, me.” It became even more telling once they showed her husband’s photo. They knew that she was the woman who disappeared as soon as she said, “Robert.”

Found Her
She Couldn’t Remember
Unfortunately, the investigators were not able to get answers from her concerning her disappearance since Flora has dementia. She could not tell them what happened the past 42 years.

She Couldn’t Remember
An Abusive Husband
“We really don’t know the circumstances of why or how she disappeared. She had psychiatric problems leading up to that point,” Detective Morgan explained. However, her caregiver Mbuva knew some pieces of Flora Stevens’ previous life. The caregiver told him that Flora said her husband had been abusive and their marriage was terrible.

An Abusive Husband
Maybe She Ran
Many detectives believe Flora got a bus ticket, skipped town, and escaped her terrible marriage. According to Detective Morgan, “Most of the secrets are locked inside of Flora, and I don’t think we’ll ever get them.”

Maybe She Ran
She Didn’t Want To Be Found
Festus Mbuva, the woman who looked after Flora for more than a decade, says “To be honest, I don’t think she ever really wanted to be found. You can tell something happened in her past that she didn’t want any part of.”

She Didn’t Want To Be Found
She’s Safe
Apparently, Flora was raised in Yonkers and often say ‘none of your business.’ According to Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty, “It’s a neat feeling [to find someone]. The main thing is we know that Flora is safe.”

She’s Safe
Solved But Unsolved
After verifying that Flora Harris and Flora Stevens were the same person, Sullivan County managed to close the case. Sheriff Mike Schiff said in a press release, “It is not too often that you get to solve a 42-year-old missing person case.”

Solved But Unsolved
A Smile And Wave
It has been a long 42 years but everyone finally found out what happened to Flora Stevens. The investigators managed to find the missing person, though we wish she was able to answer all our questions. They said goodbye to 78-year-old Flora with a smile. Thankfully, Flora was found in the end by the authorities. However, would it be possible for Matt and Laura, pre-school sweethearts, to be reunited after they were apart for many years?

A Smile And Wave
From A Young Age
Nearly 25 years ago, Matt and Laura first met at preschool in Phoenix, Arizona. At the time, they were both three years old. When Matt saw Laura on the playground, he quickly made her acquaintance, and the two became inseparable. Their parents did not think much about the children’s friendship, though.

From A Young Age
The Early Days
Speaking to Today, Matt confessed “I don’t remember the first time I saw her, but she was always a girl who let me follow her around.” Matt following Laura ended up creating something amazing.

The Early Days
Safety Buddies
The two children got the opportunity to know each other when their class went on a school trip. The preschoolers had to pair up to have a “safety buddy”. Needless to say, Matt and Laura paired up and did not let go during the entire trip.

Safety Buddies
Silly Matt
Laura quickly realized Matt was warm and kind-hearted, and he simply wanted to be friends. Before anyone knew it, the two were best friends and did everything together. They played hide-n-seek together and even did not sleep at nap time.

Silly Matt
Not Just At Preschool
The time Matt and Laura spent at preschool together was not enough for the young ones. Their parents found out about their children’s close friendship and had playdates for the two. In some of the dates, the two went to the movies together.

Not Just At Preschool
Protecting Laura
When they watched movies, Matt would show Laura his care for her by holding her hand during the films’ scary parts.

Protecting Laura
Impressing Laura
While other children bragged about their moms or dads, Matt recited lines from his favorite from one of his favorite Disney movies, The Lion King, to impress Laura, his best friend.

Impressing Laura
The Teacher
Laura was undoubtedly impressed with how Matt would recite lines from The Lion King, but he was still the one who ended up being impressed with her. Laura taught Matt how to play on the swings, draw rolling hills, and believe it or not, eat string cheese the right way. The little guy was blown away by the brilliant little girl.

The Teacher
Winning Her Over
When the preschool celebrated Cinco De Mayo, Matt impressed Laura. The other children had been unsuccessful at breaking open a piñata, but Matt, trying his best, swung really hard and successfully cracked it open. Matt recounted, “Fortunately, I was the kid who managed to do it and I assume it got her attention.”

Winning Her Over
Young Love
At four years old, Matt and Laura were a pair of “love birds”, as some people would call them. Despite their very young age, Matt did not want his feelings for Laura to remain a secret.

Young Love
Declaring His Love
Matt actually made it a point to tell his other classmates that one day, he would marry Laura. Naturally, they found it really amusing. However, he just shouted, “Just you wait!”

Declaring His Love
Birthday Parties
Matt and Laura stayed really close and enjoyed going to the birthday parties of each other, standing side by side. The pair went on many other adventures together and spent time at each other’s homes. However, preschool was almost at its end and kindergarten was bringing about a major change.

Birthday Parties
Fearing The Future
When the two kids realized they would soon be going to kindergarten, they were worried. Perhaps they would get separated and not be in one class. The idea was too dreadful for the inseparable partners. The two became fearful when it dawned on them that it might no longer be possible for them to stay at each other’s side.

Fearing The Future
Different Schools
In the end, the situation was worse. In addition to not being in the same class, they were also in different schools. It was not the choice of their parents, but the kids had to be enrolled according to their region. However, the parents promised the children they would still have playdates here and there.

Different Schools
Shaky Promises
Like their parents promised, Matt and Laura met on weekends and spent time together. Naturally, they had plenty to catch up on! They had new friends and experienced new things daily without each other.

Shaky Promises
Drifting Apart
Soon, their weekly visits got less frequent. Soon, the two were progressing from kindergarten. Matt and Laura saw each other less. Soon, the only time they got to be in touch was Christmas. This photo shows young Matt and Laura enjoying Christmas together.

Drifting Apart
Just Christmas
As time went by, the contact Matt and Laura had was reduced to Christmas cards every year. They used to play together every day, but due to such infrequent contact, the two were losing each other. As the years passed by, the pair made new friends but they never had a friendship like the one they had with each other.

Just Christmas
Growing Up
The years went by and the annual Christmas cards became less frequent and less sentimental. No one could be blamed for the change in their relationship. It was just that Matt and Laura were growing up – and growing apart. While they had an awesome childhood together, the two were now maturing.

Growing Up
High School
High school felt extremely far from kindergarten, especially from preschool, so it is not a surprise that the Matt and Laura did not really think about each other anymore. However, one day, there was something which happened in high school, which changed everything.

High School
An Accident
When Laura was a freshman, she once asked a friend if she could borrow her phone. As she was scrolling through the phone, she came across a name she used to know really well. Laura could not believe what she was seeing.

An Accident
Heartwarming Memories
As soon as she saw the name “Matt Grodsky,” Laura could not believe her eyes. She was looking at her childhood sweetheart’s name. Memories of their close friendship overwhelmed her. Her friend did not know why Laura had gone pale.

Heartwarming Memories
A Different Plan
After catching her breath, Laura told her friend she knew Matt and recounted their young romance. Then, Laura asked her friend about Matt. Her friend said she met Matt in middle school. Laura made a decision not to dwell on what she found, but her friend’s mind wandered elsewhere.

A Different Plan
Setting Them Up
Laura’s story was mind-blowing for her friend, who really wanted to set up Matt and Laura. Understandably, Laura felt unsure about the idea. She had not kept in touch with Matt for many years – Matt knew nothing about Laura and vice-versa. The relationship they had when they were little kids must be different now.

Setting Them Up
Going Ahead
Despite the fact that they were talking about her first love, Matt, Laura was not sure about having a boyfriend. She explained to People, “I was a freshman in high school so I was like, ‘I don’t think so!’” The idea made Laura nervous in general, but her friend still gave Matt Laura’s number.

Going Ahead
Matt’s Move
When Matt got Laura’s number, he was compelled to text her. Although he texted her, he had no idea how she would react. When she replied, Matt knew that everything was going to be fine.

Matt’s Move
Seeing Her
When Matt saw Laura again, the first thing he noticed was her infectious smile. Memories of how he felt about her smile came back. He said, “She always had a huge smile.”

Seeing Her
The First Date
Pretty soon, Matt and Laura set up a date. The pair wanted to go to the movies together – like old times. When they met, they clicked again, just like they did many years ago! For Matt, it was the same thing again – love at first sight.

The First Date
Like Old Times
They had a great first date and soon enough, Matt and Laura were dating as an actual couple. They both had driver’s licenses, so they could just drive to each other and being at separate high schools did not matter that much anymore. They also went together to the school dances and other functions at school.

Like Old Times
College Coming Up
While they had been separated before, college was going to be much different from the separation which they had experienced in the past. Matt and Laura obviously wanted to be together, but they were attending colleges in different states. The two needed to make quite a difficult decision. Laura said to People, “Right after we graduated from high school, we were pretty hesitant.” She added, “We were like, ‘Do we stay together? Do we try to make it work?’”

College Coming Up
Long Distance
They did not want to take away a unique college experience from each other. Laura was studying at Northern Arizona University while Matt was attending Columbia University in Chicago. There was going to be 1,600 miles between them. However, they were determined to make their relationship work despite the distance.

Long Distance
Staying In Touch
Matt and Laura decided not to lose each other again, no matter how difficult the situation would be. This is why they made it a point to Facetime each other every day even if they were in different time zones. Aside from that, they made trips to see each other when they could in order to make sure they could keep their relationship alive and well.

Staying In Touch
6 Months
Matt and Laura were thankful for social media as it helped them keep up with each other, but they still missed each other a lot. At one point, the two were apart for half a year! Matt decided to do something about their situation.

6 Months
The Perfect Throwback
The years passed and they became seniors in college. Matt prepared quite a unique date for them – a picnic at their preschool! He wanted to surprise Laura, but there was actually another reason for the well-thought-out date.

The Perfect Throwback
A Secret Plan
Matt recalled, “I convinced Laura that we were going to a picnic at the preschool. We had just finished up our junior year of college, so I framed it as a nice relaxing date.” They had been a couple for some years, and Matt prepared something for Laura, though she was completely unsuspecting.

A Secret Plan
Back To Their Roots
Laura was touched when she found out they were going to their preschool. She thought the idea for their romantic picnic was really thoughtful and personal. After all, she and Matt had found each other at that place for the first time.

Back To Their Roots
Matt’s Strange Behavior
Matt appeared fidgety in the car on their way to the preschool, but Laura chalked it up to excitement and nervousness about their secret date. However, when they arrived, she noticed that his nerves did not go away, and so her emotions began running high as well.

Matts Strange Behavior
The Big Move
Laura started to realize it was not just some picnic date. Matt went down on one knee, took her hand, looked her in the eye, held out a ring and asked her, “Will you marry me?” The moment was jaw-dropping for her but she managed to exclaim “YES!” passionately. She recalled, “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is this happening?’ I saw the ring and was like, ‘This is gorgeous. I’m so happy with it.’ I had no idea!”

The Big Move
Worrying
As for Matt, he had been quite nervous about the proposal. He was trying to pull off his life’s greatest move and he was worried he would lose the ring as well. He recalled, “I kept checking my pocket when she wasn’t looking to make sure the ring was still there.”

Worrying
Long Planning
Matt and Laura got engaged on May 23rd, 2015. However, he actually started planning the perfect proposal months before. Part of the planning was Matt asking Laura’s father for his blessing.

Long Planning
Going All Out
Matt went out and bought the ring. He even asked his brother to hide in the bushes so that he could have a video of the engagement. Matt wanted everything captured on film.

Going All Out
The Picnic Basket
Matt borrowed his parents’ picnic basket, but it was not just an ordinary basket. His own dad used it on the day he asked Matt’s mom to marry him. How special is that?

The Picnic Basket
A Special Place
Matt and Laura were in the same place where little Matt had declared his love for little Laura and their classmates laughed. He kept his promise about marrying her. Matt said to the Huffington Post “I proposed to her at the place it all began… our preschool classroom.” He continued, “When you like someone, you just kind of stand up and say it.”

A Special Place
Tying The Knot
Matt and Laura tied the knot on December 30th, 2016. The couple had their first dance to the tune of “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” by Elton John – in true Lion King style.

Tying The Knot
True Soulmates
At the Arizona Historical Society, family and friends watched the newlyweds share their first dance together. Matt’s uncle best described Matt and Laura’s unique love. “For most kids in preschool, it’s about finding your snacks and your sleeping mats, but for them it was about finding their soulmates.”

True Soulmates
For Social Media
Like many other couples, Matt and Laura shared photos of their wedding on social media. This allowed them to share their happiness with family and friends. However, their story and photos reached much farther.

Laura’s Dad Speaks Out
At the couple’s wedding ceremony, Laura’s dad shared how Laura came into her parents’ lives and their incredible adoption story which started in an orphanage in India. Laura’s parents had a story similar to Matt and Laura’s.

Lauras Dad Speaks Out
Their Own Long Distance Relationship
During his first year on a tour in India, Laura’s dad was already in a relationship with Laura’s mom. She eventually found work at the U.S. embassy in the Asian country, and the couple was together at last.

Their Own Long Distance Relationship
Visiting The Orphanage
They soon tied the knot. Laura’s mom told Laura’s dad about an orphanage in India that had a lot of children without homes to go to, so the couple visited the place together in order to see the babies. When Laura’s dad told this intimate story, the wedding guests listened carefully and they were intrigued.

Visiting The Orphanage
Adopting Laura
Even though hundreds of children were in different rooms, the couple decided to check out the room with babies. Laura was one of the babies and her future parents saw that there were drips in her arms and also tubes in her nose. According to the nurses, Laura had double-pneumonia.

Adopting Laura
Not Leaving Without Her
Even though Laura’s parents intended to adopt her, the agency’s policy was that it was their decision which baby could be adopted and by which parents. Laura’s parents, however, were set on adopting the baby meant for them.

Not Leaving Without Her
A Different Place
Laura’s dad realized there was a need for a new strategy, and while it was risky, the new strategy paid off. He had a job at the American embassy at the time, so he managed to ‘bribe’ the agency’s officials with U.S. products.

A Different Place
Back To Now
All of these events ended up bringing the two lovebirds together. “Love is not one moment, not even this moment – it’s every moment,” Matt’s uncle said at their wedding ceremony. This is something everyone should think about.
