A Glimpse of Suspicion
Kiara couldn’t get the bag off her mind for some reason. It had been softly pulling at her mind ever since the man threw it in the trash. As she edged closer, she said, “It’s nothing,” in an attempt to shake the feeling. Her heart was racing as she stopped at the restaurant window. What on earth was she getting herself into? That trash can’s contents seemed to be more than simply rubbish. Kiara had a gut feeling that trouble was lurking in the shadows because something didn’t add up.

A Glimpse Of Suspicion
Crossing a Line
Sometimes the best course of action is to walk away. Kiara Johnson was aware of this, but curiosity or maybe obligation kept her grounded. Even if her gut told her not to, the bag beckoned. She felt a surge of fear as she saw the man reentering the restaurant. She had the option to ignore it. However, she couldn’t overlook a possible danger to her employees or clients as a manager. There would be a price to that choice.

Crossing A Line
The Bag That Should’ve Stayed
The bag—heavy, brown, and strangely out of place was hidden under greasy wrappers and ripped napkins. Its weight and importance were not concealed by the ketchup smears. Kiara could have thrown it back without giving it another look. Rather, she grabbed for it. She unintentionally opened a door to something sinister at that very moment—something better left unexplored.

The Bag That Should’ve Stayed
Survival Over Passion
Kiara was trying her hardest to survive at the age of 27. Things had not gone as planned in Tampa. Having a degree in art history but no employment to go along with it, she was a single mother whose top priority was to provide for Lily. She used to have dreams, but reality required her to take action. Kiara was torn between what she needed and what she loved because of her developing child, rent, and groceries.

Survival Over Passion
Dreams Deferred
Kiara’s life aspirations never included working at McDonald’s. Dreams don’t pay the bills, but she used to envision leading gallery visits in Miami or New York, where she would be engaged in art rather than fast food. Lily needed to move quickly as her school deadlines drew near and the rent accumulated. When a child depends on you and you’re broke, survival takes precedence over ambition.

Dreams Deferred
An Unexpected Lifeline
The job posting for a manager in Ybor City was both offensive and promising. Kiara applied despite initially feeling discouraged because her job hunt had been unsuccessful for far too long. She felt as though this was her last chance. She was unaware that a sinister and perverse chain of events was waiting behind this McDonald’s counter.

An Unexpected Lifeline
Settling Into Routine
It felt like a minor success to get the job. Kiara got to work right away and was surprised to find solace in the building. Her business management minor kicked in, and her days took on a rhythm. She was naturally adept at managing shifts, preparing meals, and leading a team. Her purpose came from meeting customers, staff planning, and morning check-ins. Things appeared stable for once. Peace, however, is short-lived.

Settling Into Routine
Everything Seemed Normal
It began just like any other day. Kiara took the train to work after leaving Lily off at her sister’s house, prepared to open. As soon as she got there, the restaurant was packed with regulars, locals, and vendors. She was pleased. Her employees worked as efficiently as clockwork. But as soon as he entered, that feeling of routine was destroyed.

Everything Seemed Normal
A Stranger Among Regulars
Strangers stood out in a community filled of familiar faces. At first, the tall, wiry man’s presence didn’t seem dangerous because of the shadows generated by his hoodie. However, Kiara was unable to get rid of the sense that something was wrong. His demeanor, his stillness, and the way he looked around the room were all off. She also rarely made mistakes with her instincts.

A Stranger Among Regulars
Eyes That Hid Secrets
Like everyone else, he stood in line, but his eyes were a dead giveaway. They darted nervously, searching and calculating, hidden behind untidy bangs and a low cap. He appeared to be fleeing from something. Kiara shivered. She had previously encountered that expression in news articles and motion pictures. She sensed that trouble was approaching.

Eyes That Hid Secrets
Being Rational
But Kiara had never been one to make snap judgments about individuals based just on their appearance. Indeed, the man appeared tense, as if he were hiding. Despite being in the center of the city, his boots were filthy from dried mud and his clothes were well-worn. He appeared to have traveled a great distance based on the dirt on his clothing. Perhaps he was traveling from the countryside and wanted a quick supper before going.

Being Rational
Up Close And Personal
The customer line moved quickly, and before Kiara realized it, the man was in front of her. Up close, he appeared more composed, and his piercing gaze caused her to slowly retreat. However, his eyes continued to stray to his side, where the restaurant windows were, and he still appeared uncomfortable. Was he holding out for someone?

Up Close And Personal
His Order
Kiara asked him nervously what he wanted to eat. She had to use every effort to maintain her composure. The man pointed to a double cheeseburger on the menu after grinning and flashing a row of decaying teeth. “Two double cheeseburgers with extra pickles and a large Coke. Takeaway, please,” said the man. Even though Kiara couldn’t identify his accent from these few words, she was certain he wasn’t local. “Coming right up,” she said with a smile.

His Order
Is There A Problem?
With a nod, the man gave him a ten-dollar bill. His forearm was filthy with the same hardened mud that darkened his pants, and the tips of his fingernails were black. He yanked Kiara away from her scrutiny and asked sternly, “Is there a problem?” “No, sir,” she hurriedly said, trying to grin while entering the man’s order into her tablet. There was an uneasy feeling.

Keep Him In Your Sight
While the man moved aside to await his command, Kiara continued to watch him. In the minutes he spent in one of the restaurant’s booths, she had made every effort to keep her thoughts busy. But her gaze kept shifting to him. She experienced the same unsettling sensation that had overtaken her when she first saw him enter. What was going on?

Keep Him In Your Sight
Words Of Wisdom
Kiara had always had a keen sense of intuition. Her late mother used to advise her to trust her instincts. If anything didn’t feel right, it probably wasn’t. When she smelled trouble, her mother had always advised her to flee. “It’s safer to walk away from a bull before it starts charging at you,” she typically stated. Could Kiara use the same mindset in this situation?

Words Of Wisdom
Leave Before It’s Too Late
Kiara found herself in a difficult situation. Everything in her told her to take off her apron and get out of the restaurant. There was something wrong with the man, and it would have been prudent to leave before things got out of hand. However, Kiara was a manager, and all of the employees and clients looked up to her for leadership and service. She would be the one to respond if something went wrong.

Leave Before It’s Too Late
A Simple Step
Additionally, if something horrible happened after she left the restaurant, she wouldn’t be able to sleep at night. “A captain stays with the sinking ship,” she muttered, laughing wearily. Kiara waited for the man to finish his order. Now all she needed to do was give it to him and watch him walk out of the restaurant. Everything would go back to how it was. Or so she believed.

A Simple Step
Taking The Food To Him
The man’s food was carried over by Kiara. However, he opened the bag and began eating rather than turning to leave. She was confused by this, mostly because the man had asked for takeout. She tried not to look at him, but her gut clenched. There was something about his manner that made her skin crawl, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

Taking The Food To Him
Watching Closely
Kiara went back to her position and carried on managing her staff and taking commands. However, she could see that the man’s lips were moving from where she was. She initially believed he was chewing his food. He hadn’t eaten any of his pickles and still had one burger to go. But then she saw something that made her shudder with terror.

Watching Closely
What Is He Saying?
The man was talking instead of chewing. However, it wasn’t all of it. He didn’t have a phone close to his ear, and nobody was in the vicinity of his booth. Kiara’s brows furrowed. In an attempt to hear the man’s words, she pretended to gather a few soiled glasses next to his booth. She had an epiphany at that point.

Listening In
What if the man required assistance after escaping from a mental health facility? Was that the reason Kiara had been nervous since the man entered? Was her soul begging her to assist him?She approached the man closely enough to verify that he was, in fact, whispering to himself. However, she was unable to read the words. She had to move in closer.

Listening In
Does He Need Help?
As they got closer, Kiara was still unable to understand the man’s words. However, he sounded furious, and Kiara found his menacing voice dull. Was he in need of assistance?Kiara was tense. She wondered if she should go up to him and inquire how he was doing. She typically took things head-on and had never been one to skirt the issue. But then she recalled what her mother had told her.

A Threatening Aura
“When you see trouble, run the other way,” she thought to herself. She saw the man was now staring at her as she went back to her position behind the counter. She could tell by his expression that he didn’t require any assistance at all. In actuality, he posed the greatest threat in this situation. Kiara ought to have contacted the police.

A Threatening Aura
He’s Done
The man tossed the rest of his pickles and burger into the paper bag that was included. He quickly reached under his sweatshirt for something black, stuffed it with the food, and looked up to check if anyone had noticed him. Kiara feigned to be speaking to a staff member, having been observing him out of the corner of her eye.

He’s Done
Something’s Up
The man got up and calmly tossed the brown paper bag into the restaurant’s trash can. He glanced around once more, tossed in his big soda cup, and walked away. He peered out the window of the restaurant to check whether anyone was staring at him or heading to the garbage can. There was a problem.

Something’s Up
Taking Out The Bag
After waiting for him to leave, Kiara went to the trash can to check what he had put in with his food as soon as he vanished behind the restaurant’s corner. She pulled out the big bag and winced as the mustard and ketchup that had contaminated it went on her fingers. In her ears, her heart pounded. There was no going back from this moment.

Taking Out The Bag
Call The Authorities
Knowing there would be no turning back if she opened the bag, Kiara stood in front of the garbage can. The fact that it was heavier than necessary meant the man had concealed something within. She took a deep breath and opened it, her heart racing at what she saw. “Call the authorities,” her thoughts yelled.

Call The Authorities
Cold Steel
The man had thrown the paper bag in the trash after stuffing a gun inside. Kiara stood stunned, trying to make sense of it all. Did she truly discover a dark scheme at work here, or was this just a practical joke? Did the man commit any crimes? If only she was aware of what she had entered.

Cold Steel
Should’ve Gone Home
Kiara was unable to get to her phone quickly enough. When she called the police, they arrived right away. After designating the restaurant as a crime scene, they began questioning patrons. In the midst of all this mayhem, Kiara was doing her best to assist. She ought to have stopped and returned home, but she chose not to. She will soon come to regret her choice.
