Rescuers Couldn’t Believe What They Were Seeing After This Golden Retriever Gave Birth

Published on 12/13/2021

In late 2017, two dog-loving foster parents received Rosie, a pregnant golden retriever mix. They had hoped for a huge litter of fluffy, golden puppies, but instead received a litter that was nothing like they had envisaged. These bizarrely colored puppies sent the internet into a frenzy. In a unique method, Rosie gave birth to these puppies. What happened to these puppies after they were raised? In this charming story, you’ll learn about Rosie and her unexpected litter.

Golden Retriever Surprises Rescuers After Giving Birth To Her Litter

Meet Rosie

In October 2017, Rosie, a golden retriever mix, was disowned by her prior owners. She was dumped in a shelter, obviously pregnant, and about to give birth. The shelter’s manager was concerned about her health and the possibility of her giving delivery without assistance. Despite significant reductions in euthanasia policies, most shelters are overcrowded with dogs and lack the means to care for a new litter. Rosie, more than ever, was in desperate need of loving owners.

She Was Rescued

The shelter’s manager contacted Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue in Raleigh, North Carolina, which assists pets in finding homes. Rosie’s rescuers had to work swiftly to rehabilitate her before she gave birth. The Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue and Rehabilitation Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to golden retriever rescue and rehabilitation. Volunteers provide care for stray or abandoned pets until they can be adopted. Rosie was fortunate in that one of the group’s members heard of a couple who could meet her needs.

Help Was Near

Rosie was picked up from the shelter the morning following the call by a Neuse volunteer. At this point, Rosie appeared to be on the verge of giving birth, and the volunteer was anxious that she would give birth on the trip to the Raleigh Vet Clinic. The volunteer checked Rosie into the clinic, and the vets decided that she was healthy. The rescuer’s next task was to find Rosie a foster family who could assist her with her pregnancy.

John And Katie Black

Katie and John Black have rescued almost 20 dogs since 2009, and they have three of their own: Annie, Leroy, and Winchester. John and Katie, the volunteer believed, had the requisite experience to care for Rosie and her puppies. The couple, who had worked with Neuse River for years, we’re ecstatic to see Rosie. They brought Rosie home on October 28, 2017, five days after she was abandoned off at the shelter.

Rosie Loved Being With Them

Rosie was picked up by the Blacks only five days after she was dropped off at the shelter. “This is our new foster, Rosie,” the Blacks said on Instagram, “who is very preggers and close to delivering her puppies.” According to the pair, Rosie appeared shy and scared but was generally very lovely. Katie and John Black aided Rosie in giving delivery successfully when the time came. Rosie’s four healthy puppies, as well as a surprise that gripped the internet, were introduced to them.

She Gave Birth

John and Kate assisted with the delivery of Rosie’s puppies. Despite the challenges, the mother and the puppies both made it through. Rosie’s puppies were all the appropriate size and weight for her breed…or at least for the breed that everyone imagined she belonged to. The parents expected a huge litter because Rosie appeared to be so large. Even while typical litters have five or six puppies, Rosie only had four. However, the Blacks weren’t the only ones who were surprised.

Not What They Were Expecting

Katie said, “Our foster dog, a Golden mix, gave birth yesterday…  To baby cows.” The four puppies had black markings and didn’t resemble their mother in the least. Even though no one knows what breed the father was, he was certainly not a Golden Retriever. The Blacks gave the newborn puppies names like Daisy, Clarabelle, Betsy, and Moo. The internet, as well as the Blacks’ family, made jokes about the family photos. In November 2017, Katie told the Press Association, “My dad laughed for quite a while at the photos.”

Who The Father Might Be

It can be difficult to determine the father’s breed because various dog breeds have white fur with black markings. He, like Rosie, had the potential to be a mash-up. This hasn’t prevented internet users from trying to figure out what breed Rosie mated with. Some of the theories include Dalmatian, English setter, bluetick coonhound, and wetterhoun. Only dalmatians, on the other hand, have a real “spot” pattern. Every other fur pattern is made up of small, discrete patches of tiny dots called “ticking.” As a result, a dalmatian is a strong contender.

Just Like Their Dad

According to the Nest, puppies inherit certain characteristics based on the genes carried by their parents. “Dominant genes always outrank recessive genes,” according to the Australian Shepherd Health & Genetics Institute, determining the appearance of a dog Rosie most certainly inherited recessive genes from her mother, while her father inherited dominant genes. All of her puppies inherited the physical qualities of their father by happenstance. The explanation, however, does not take away from the pair’s amusement.

The Internet Loved Them

The cow puppies and their mother, a visibly astonished Golden Retriever, drew a large number of Redditors. Users did their best to interpret Rosie’s expression. “I believe there’s been a mixpup here,” one Redditor quipped. Others commented that she appeared to be mentally defending her puppies. Rosie’s face, according to one user, said, “so what?!?! is that really such a big deal? are you sooo closed minded? really Karen?”

Defending Herself

Despite the excellent feedback, some users were concerned that Kate and John had purposely mated two foster rescues. Rosie was already pregnant when Kate came, Kate confirmed. “We weren’t going to abort her puppies,” she commented. “She will be spayed immediately when she can be.” Rosie and her brood were to be adopted as soon as they were healthy, as John and Kate already had three rescue dogs. They wouldn’t have to wait long, but they’d have to work for it.

Rosie Wasn’t Doing Good

Despite the fact that the birth was a success, Rosie was in poor health afterward. After Rosie’s delivery, the Blacks realized she had an infection. They took her to the vet, who gave her antibiotics for a few weeks. Metritis, a bacterial infection in the uterus that develops after a difficult birth, was most likely the case for Rosie. As a result of the symptoms, Rosie’s milk production may be diminished, and she may be unable to care for her puppies. It’s fortunate that Kate and John were by her side.

They Helped Rosie Heal

While Rosie was healing, the Blacks helped her by bottle-feeding the puppies. They were smitten by each puppy, especially while they were holding it. John and Kate treated the puppies as if they were their own, despite the fact that they knew they wouldn’t be able to keep them. Rosie, thankfully, made a rapid recovery. She soon stopped overfeeding her puppies and resumed her role as a happy and healthy mother. Her puppies also grew up with little problems.

A Good Mom

Rosie appeared unfazed as social media users questioned the peculiar relationship. She remained protective of her pups for weeks, cuddling next to them. As children, Moo, Betsy, Daisy, and Clarabelle were all healthy. “She’s one proud mama,” Kate said. Rosie would follow her pets around wherever they went, according to Instagram. After Kate relocated the puppies to clean linens in a laundry basket, Rosie hopped in.

Not Uncommon

According to the authors of Pets4Homes, puppies that look different from their parents or littermates are prevalent in dogs, especially in mixed breeds. “When it comes to non-pedigree dogs…there is a lot more scope for variance, to the point that color and other manifestations of physical appearance can be quite variable within the same litter.” Onlookers are intrigued by Rosie’s puppies’ resemblance to cows, despite the fact that none of them resembled dogs at initially. As they grew older, they developed into their dog forms.

Kate and John not only cared for the puppies admirably, but they also kept the family’s most enthusiastic supporters up to date. They maintained their Instagram profile updated on a regular basis so that everyone could follow the progress of the cow babies. Rosie’s puppies hung out with her all the time, napping on her paws. According to the Blacks, Clarabelle displayed her real colors early on by being the loudest of the puppies. As the mini-cows grew older, their personalities appeared.

When the pups celebrated their birthday in early December 2017, they had only been living for a few weeks. They had acquired different personalities even at that young age. On December 6th, Kate shared a photo of the cow puppies on Instagram. “Daisy is a sweetheart, but a little anxious/shy/hesitant/fearful. Clarabelle is a hilarious, fearless spitfire. Moo is a snuggly baby that likes to be held, and cries when he wants attention. [Betsy is] the sweetest and most gentle puppy, I want to keep her!”

The Pups Were Separated

In the first week of January 2018, two different families adopted Betsy and Clarabelle. The Blacks were sad to see them leave, but they made certain that each cow pup received the love and attention they needed. Daisy was also adopted, and her new family gave her the name Lily. Later on, Moo was given a new home and a new name, Barkley. Moo, like his new siblings Max, Mo, and Abby, has his own Instagram account.

Saying Goodbye To Her Pups

Rosie, on the other hand, has found her eternal home. While John and Kate will be saddened by Rosie’s leaving, she will be reunited with a new family who will not desert her. Everyone understands that this will be better for her in the long run. When Rosie was well enough, John and Kate had her spayed. She is not allowed to have puppies any longer, and she may never see them again. All dogs, on the other hand, will be adopted into loving homes.

A Couple Caught In Hurricane Harvey

Did the story about the puppies who looked like cows amuse you? Then read on for a heartwarming story about a cow who “pretended” to be a dog in order to survive. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey caused havoc on many people’s lives in Louisiana, Belize, Nicaragua, Texas, and beyond. City streets and country pastures were flooded as a result, placing residents like Tammy Canton and her husband in danger. Canton and her husband were among the tens of thousands who had to figure out how to survive the calamity. They were met with a slightly different circumstance on top of the hurricane…

They Used Their House As A Shelter

In the Cantons, two more families and eight more pets have found a safe haven! Consider the amount of commotion in your home. In Fulshear, Texas, they didn’t have much room. Tammy’s husband then discovered something that would make things a little more difficult for everyone while also taking up more room, seemingly out of nowhere. What exactly did he see? You never know what might happen in a cyclone, so be prepared for the unexpected…

Their Shelter Grew Quickly

If you were in this circumstance, what would be the last thing on your mind? One of the family’s prized cows had suddenly given birth after the storm had gone. “My husband noticed she [the calf] was standing in water not nursing from her mom,” Tammy explained. The calf is normally nursed by the mother cow after it is born, thus the fact that the calf is not nursing raises red signals immediately away. Something else was going on as well…

An Unfortunate Calf

Tammy shared, “The water was extremely cold and the pasture was holding quite a bit of water.” Have you ever come across a stray dog while it’s raining? Now multiply that by ten with this poor little calf. The calf was also “weak and shivering from the cold rain,” according to Tammy. What are the couple’s alternatives in this situation? One thing was certain: they couldn’t just stand around and let the poor creature freeze!

Making A Move

It is scientifically known that young animals cannot survive on their own for long periods of time. Because the weather was poor and the conditions were even worse, this calf could only go so far without assistance. The seconds were ticking away. Tammy was well aware of the problem and knew she and her husband needed to take action. Even though the house was already full of people and dogs, they decided to play hero once again for the sake of the calf.

Rescue Was On The way

Like the good Samaritans they are, Tammy and her husband risked the flooded meadow to approach the little cow. We have no idea how many others are capable of doing so. When Tammy arrived, she was surprised to see the calf in such a horrible state. She was weak and trembling severely from the cold, and she could scarcely stand. Tammy said, “She seemed too far gone for me to help her.”

Meet Harveigh

Tammy and her family gave the tiny calf the name Harveigh. Because she was so young, she didn’t have a strong enough immune system to deal with that kind of weather. Things would also be difficult without her mother’s help. Tammy was told by a veterinarian to restrict Harveigh inside the house until she recovered her strength. Tammy needed her own area, so she decided to put Harveigh in the laundry room.

Recovering

Harveigh had been rescued for weeks, and things were starting to look good for the young cow. She was sleeping on a dog bed and consuming hand-fed formula at this time. With each passing day, Harveigh became stronger, and Tammy and her family hoped she would be able to return to the pasture soon. Surprisingly, Harveigh was able to make some unexpected and much-needed friends throughout her recovery…

Loved By The Dog

Contrary to popular belief, pit bulls are a joy to behold. One night, Sealy, the family pit bull, began licking Harveigh, and the calf almost instantly perked up with excitement. “All of the dogs seemed to love her right away,” Tammy remarked. Nobody realized that this was only the beginning of something genuinely unusual and surprising.

Suddenly, the seeds of lovely relationships sprouted right before everyone’s eyes. We felt like we were in a children’s novel, but we weren’t complaining! Harveigh started to feel better after her ordeal and rapidly became attached to her new surroundings. Harveigh began emulating the actions of her newfound buddies! She rapidly became one of the dogs as she played with them every day and night. Who could have foreseen it?

The good news is that they shared my sentiments! This is unmistakably a Disney tale in the making due to the dynamics. Can you imagine a pit bull bonding with a calf with ease? “Sealy loves to spend her time playing, cleaning, and protecting baby Harveigh. These two have such a special bond,” Tammy made a post on her Facebook page. This connection can only be characterized as extraordinary. Tammy, we’re sure, relished every moment of it…

She Couldn’t Fit Anymore

As everyone knows, a cow cannot be housed in a typical home. The pit bull’s little calf grew to be over 400 pounds after getting along with him. Tammy needed to come up with a solution because she was quickly becoming a thorn in her side. Harveigh had gotten so big that she couldn’t fit in the laundry room anymore! As a result, she needed a place to stay. What do you think are Tammy and her husband’s plans for Harveigh?

She Couldn’t Fit Anymore

She Couldn’t Fit Anymore

She Wouldn’t Graze

If an animal begins to reside inside for an extended amount of time, only one thing can happen. The animal will become accustomed to the luxuries and will loathe leaving them. Harveigh had the same thing. After a while, she wouldn’t even graze in the pasture with the other six cows. Tammy and her husband would take her out to the barn, where she would moo to be allowed back in.

She Wouldn’t Graze

The Cow Condo

Tammy and her husband went above and beyond the call of duty for any caring caregiver. They devised a strategy for accommodating Harveigh while preserving her happiness. As a result of their efforts, they constructed a “cow condo.” They made her a personal apartment out of the garden shed! She had a personal space heater in there, for crying out loud! She was residing in a hybrid structure that served as both a barn and a home.

She Dislikes It

Harveigh didn’t think it was enough that Tammy had set aside a space for her to call her own. She elected to sleep outside at the main house’s entrance after only one night in the condo. Why didn’t she want to stay at the apartment? Harveigh preferred to spend as little time as possible at home, preferring to play with the dogs and the rest of the family instead. That peaceful life wasn’t for her…

She Dislikes It

Growing Large

Harveigh grew even bigger as time went on, as cows do. Her increasing stature became a burden as she became a threat to those she loved. Harveigh used to be able to blend in with the other animals and people, but she’d soon require the assistance of a chaperone. Her bulk alone may have hurt the dogs if they were roughhousing too much. No one likes to see a puppy in distress!

Teaching Harveigh To Be A Cow

Harveigh was not raised in the typical way that cows are raised, as you’ve heard from the story. As a result, Tammy had no choice but to take matters into her own hands and try to revert Harveigh to a normal cow. Her process had multiple steps, one of which was to take her out to the barn for quick visits. Tammy’s efforts were almost in vain because the results of her visits were mixed…

Her Transition

“We are slowly introducing her,” Tammy said. “It’s so hard not to go and just get her out. If she wants to learn how to ‘cow,’ she will need to spend time with them.” It looks that this is a classic case of attempting to turn a house dog into an outside dog. For starters, both humans and dogs find it challenging. Second, the animal takes a little longer to get the concept, but Harveigh’s sight of the other cows outdoors likely helped a little more.

A Sneaky Cow

Perhaps you’ve had a pet or know someone who knows how to crack the code. The secret we’re discussing is how to open the door without the need for any tools! Harveigh learned how to enter through the rear door on her own. She could make herself at home whenever she wanted to get away from the cows, but she still had to follow the rules. “I don’t let her free roam in the house,” Tammy said. “Just quick visits to come in and say hi to our dogs.”

A Happy Cow

Yes, Harveigh had to give up most of her canine habits in order to acclimate to cow life, but Tammy couldn’t help but indulge her now and then. She even gave her a dog treat now and then. “It fills my heart with joy being able to spend so much sweet time with her,” Tammy explained. “She will literally lay her head on my lap and be at peace.” What an amazing and sweet story.

What Should We Do If This Happened To Us?

If you are not a licensed physician or veterinarian, the best thing you can do in this scenario is contact for assistance. Your first step should be to contact a local veterinary facility. Of course, nature can take its course and allow the mother dog to give birth without assistance but be aware that difficulties may arise, and you should not simply touch the kids after they have been born. Call a professional and leave the problem in their hands.

Choosing the Right Puppy

If you’ve determined that now is the right time to get a puppy, the next step is to find the perfect match. Occasionally, a puppy will appear in your life by chance, and you will immediately feel a bond with them and know they are the perfect match for you. Perhaps you’ll run into your future partner. This, however, does not always occur. You’ll have to go out and find the right kind of puppy for you on a frequent basis.

First and foremost, consider your lifestyle and the traits you are looking for in a dog. Do you want a purebred dog or a dog that is a mix of breeds? Is it preferable to be large or small? There are still more factors to consider, such as grooming and exercise needs, temperament, and any potential health issues.
