‘Little People Big World’ Tori Roloff Makes A Big An Announcement

Published on 05/26/2019

It was only natural for Tori Roloff of Little People, Big World fame to expect a baby with dwarfism when she gave birth. After all, Zach had the condition himself and so did his parents. However, there was another obstacle that these TLC stars had to deal with.

Entering Motherhood

Tori Roloff was both excited and nervous to give birth to a child. This is a common feeling among expecting mothers, after all. Just like the rest, she was happy to finally welcome her own bundle of joy into the world. However, she had no way of knowing what was in store for her.

Expected Diagnosis

At the time of the pregnancy, Zach and Tori knew that there was a good chance their kid would inherit his condition. If you watch their show on TLC, you would know that he has achondroplasia, which is more commonly known as dwarfism. The couple were not surprised at all to receive the diagnosis that their baby had achondroplasia. Despite that, the two of them could not wait for their first child.

Leaving Her Day Job

Before giving birth, Tori was a teacher at a kindergarten. She was delighted when she was finally expecting, although she was sad to go on maternity leave because she would no longer see her ‘kinders’. Still, she hoped to come back after giving birth. She said, “Can’t wait to take baby Roloff back to school to introduce him to the kids he’s listened to the last 9 months!” Isn’t that sweet?

Aside from working as a teacher, she also appears on the TLC show, Little People, Big World. It started with Zach’s family. On the show, you will get to know more about his parents too. Zach inherited the same kind of dwarfism his mother has. His father, meanwhile, has a different type.

Little People, Big World focuses on a family called the Roloffs. Matt and Amy Roloff are both little people. They have four children together, although Zach was the only one with dwarfism. Zach’s twin brother Jeremy and their two other siblings did not inherit the condition. They have been featured on the small screen since 2006!

Show’s Positive Portrayal

Not long after its premiere, Little People, Big World earned a following and got high ratings for TLC. It was inevitable that they renewed the show for one more season. The rest was history. Although some thought the show portrayed little people in a positive light, it received a fair amount of criticism too. Critics said the show depicted the romantic relationships of the family in a rather voyeuristic manner. Regardless, the reception was generally good, and many liked how feel-good it was.

Family History

If you watch Little People, Big World, we bet you already know how much work the family puts on the farm. It is labor-intensive work, so physical health is important. Unfortunately, the family is plagued by a number of issues. Because of their dwarfism, Matthew, Amy and Zach all suffer from various health complications. Matthew has what is called diastrophic dysplasia, which has led to numerous surgeries when he was younger. These days, he has to use crutches and motor vehicles to get around. Although Amy only has minor problems, Zach also went through surgeries as a child.

A Chance To Educate

When the concept of the reality show was first proposed, the Roloffs could not wait to let everyone know about their story. Amy recounted it this way: “The Learning Channel came to us about five or six years ago, and so we suddenly realized we were given a great opportunity to educate people about dwarfism. Nothing [else] had depicted dwarfism in an everyday way.” When the show debuted, fans kept approaching and messaging the family to let them know they enjoyed learning about their lives.

Spinoff

The show enjoyed such positive reception that the producers at the TLC network proposed a spinoff. It was called Little People, Big World: Wedding Farm and made its debut in 2012. The show followed Matthew and Amy as they entered the wedding planning field, though the show remained focus on their family dynamics as well.

Short Lived

Sadly, the spinoff failed to achieve what Little People, Big World did. This was a difficult feat since the original show had millions of viewers. They had to cancel the new show after its first season. It showed Molly getting ready to go to college as well as the silver wedding anniversary of the family patriarch and matriarch. Fans were relieved to hear that the original show was renewed.

Jacob Leaves

At the beginning, each Roloff family member got to star in the show. Unfortunately, things had to change when Jacob, the youngest child, took a stand. He did not feel compelled to participate in the show any longer. According to him, he did not like the idea that he was portrayed not as a person but as a character. He said, “The family that is filmed is not my family. They are the Roloff characters and I have scarcely anything in common with them, nor do I want to be a character myself.”

The Fans Meet Tori

Fans adored Zach, who was a sweet and shy person. Many started to wonder when he would start to date. Viewers got their wish in 2010, which was the time Tori started to work at the farm on a part-time basis. Like him, she was shy as well. However, the two were attracted to each right away. Everyone watched in satisfaction when Zach finally asked her out after knowing each other for four months.

After four years together, the couple got engaged. They were clearly head over heels in love! Zach said, “Tori brought me out of my shell and made me more social, she gave me confidence.” Meanwhile, Tori said, “We’re such a unique pairing, and we have a really cool story to share, but it was terrifying. But the show has helped me realize I shouldn’t worry about what other people think.” Zach said that he did not think too much about marriage, although he was truly excited to start a new chapter with the love of his life.

The big day happened on July 27, 2015. The couple walked down the aisle at long last! They invited a hundred guests to the wedding, which was filmed by the network as well. If you want to watch the wedding, head on to season nine. However, it was Jeremy who was the first of the siblings to get married the season prior. Both the couples got married at their farm.

Separation Announcement

There was some bad news after Tori and Zach’s wedding, however. Viewers were shocked to hear that Matthew and Amy decided to get a divorce after 30 years together. The couple, however, ended things on good terms for the sake of business and family. This was the statement they issued about it: “Our kids and our ever-growing family, and the love and support we have for them, will be our priority. We will continue to work together side-by-side in the daily responsibilities for our many current ventures.”

Confronting The Possibilities

The family actually discussed the chances of the child inheriting dwarfism in one episode on the show. They talked about the likelihood of a baby getting the same complications and what this would mean in the future. Tori said, “No parent wants to hear that their child is different, no matter what that is.” To which Zach replied, “But to me, that’s not different, he’s just like me.”

Before their child was born, the couple celebrated their seventh anniversary together. Tori made a touching tribute to Zach about their first meeting to where they currently stand. She took to Instagram to post a picture with this caption: “Zachary, you make me smile every day and I love our conversations about life and our dreams together. You are definitely my better half and I pray every day that I can be a better wife to you.” Soon after this, the two welcomed their first child into the world.

Extra Encouragement

On the topic of parenting, Zach has a couple of things to share: “You have to encourage a dwarf child a little more because it will take them five steps to do what others can do in two, but I knew, dwarf or not, I was going to parent my child with the mentality that not everyone gets a trophy. You have to earn it.”

The Beginning

The child’s dwarfism did not have any impact whatsoever on how much his parents adored and loved him. Like many new parents, they were excited about the new family member. Tori posted photos and updates on Instagram to let everyone in on the excitement. “Jackson is one month old today! He is eating and growing like a champ. Loves watching soccer with daddy. Starting to find his voice. Sleeps 5-6 hour stretches at night,” read one of her posts. However, they eventually run into a problem.

Even though Tori’s posts made everything look fine, the truth was different for her and the rest of the family. She confessed she was having trouble breastfeeding! On social media, she revealed, “Hands down the hardest thing about being a mom has been breastfeeding. It was something I did not expect. I just figured it would come naturally because it’s what nature intended – I was so wrong.” Thousands of her followers agreed with her sentiment.

Speaking Out

She did not limit it to a single post, however. She kept talking about the struggle. She said, “I get asked at all my appointments how BFing is going and I couldn’t imagine how that would make the women who physically can’t feel. I also HATE the stigma of breastfeeding.” The fact that she opened up about this problem made people admire her bravery. We all know people do not like to talk about this issue.

Maybe it was not that big of a surprise for Tori to speak about such a topic. After all, she already knew how to handle fame and recognize from her time on the show. Let us not forget that she documented the pregnancy for her fans. When she was expecting, she talked in detail about her cravings and the like. However, it was still a bit surprising to hear someone talk about such a personal matter.

Fighting The Stigma

There is nothing new about the stigma that surrounds breastfeeding. For decades now, people have argued about the “propriety” of doing it in public. There are mothers who have been condemned for doing something like this even though it is a natural part of life. The debate has often made many new moms feel conflicted and ashamed. However, nothing should come about the needs of their child.

National Debate

Although there is widespread stigma around doing the act in a public space, keep in mind that it is legal in 49 of the 50 states in the country. Idaho remains the outlier. Even though it is fine in the eyes of the law, many women who do it in public suffer harassment and ridicule from passersby. Tori was in a different position from most mothers, and she used her popularity as an opportunity to speak about it.

Raising Awareness

She was a first-time mother, so she felt a variety of emotions when it comes to breastfeeding. The issue was, of course, extremely personal for her. She has admitted, “I still feel awkward in public when I feed my baby. Why should I?” A lot of women who speak out about it get silenced or ignored when they explain their side. This is the reason Tori received the support of fans when she decided to use her platform to talk about this important topic.

Tori did not hesitate to talk about her experience. According to her, she struggled in the beginning but has since gotten used to it in a way. She explained, “I’m providing for my child. Many were thankful that someone like Tori decided to speak up about it with heart and honesty. Mothers from all over the world were able to relate to her issue. This was a comment left by one such woman; “Great post!! No one should feel ashamed or guilty or degraded for not being able to breastfeed or for not wanting to breastfeed. It’s personal. Her posts kept getting more popular, even landing the attention of professionals and experts. An expert took the time to write this: “I work as a nurse in women’s services. I have said this for awhile that we are setting up moms to have a lot more postpartum depression issues.”

This co-worker of ours was so insistent that Zach talk to me, but he was too nervous, so nothing really came about.” Meanwhile, Tori explained that it was only after three or four months before he worked the nerve to ask her out. A lot of people wanted to know about the decision. He said, “There’s [sic] two ways to do the filming thing — one way is through the show, maybe and the other way is through myself and vlogs. It’s just more free doing it myself, I can do anything, I can say anything, I can talk about anything — I can show whatever I want. I don’t want people to think that I’m living in a resentful sort of way towards the show — I’ve moved on from it.
