Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city is home to a very special organization that was founded back in 1977. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust focuses on rescuing orphaned elephants and it also has a major wildlife rehabilitation program for wild animals. However, their responsibilities include everything related to conservation, preservation and the protection of wildlife. The people that work with this organization do the most remarkable things and deeply care about all the animals that they encounter.

Rescue Operation
Earlier this year, The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust conducted a rescue operation that took place out in the wild. The conservationists that were called to complete the mission said that nothing seemed too strange about what they were told to do. It was just an ordinary day in which they were doing what they loved. Their goal was to rescue a very young zebra who had sadly just lost his mother to a pride of lions.

The young Zebra that was successfully rescued was only a few days old and had already experienced such a traumatic situation. Now you may be thinking that animals living in the wild usually learn to adapt and survive on their own, however as the foal was so young and at the most delicate stage of his life – he really needed his mother. His chances of survival alone in the wild were not so high.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust immediately took the foal into their care and also named him Diria. The keepers of the non-profit are doing their best to try and give Diria the most natural upbringing possible – no matter how difficult it may be. As zebras’ in the wild typically develop a strong bond with their mother, the keepers came up with the perfect solution for Daria. What exactly did they have in mind?

New Environment
The animal caretakers decided that they would alternate the task of wearing a long, zebra-print coat which would then help them look like his surrogate mom. They all did so every time they were around the adorable foal, whether it was providing comfort or at his regular bottle feeds. This has been reported as a hugely successful technique to get animals acquainted with their new environment.

The executive director of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Rob Brandford added, “Diria is incredibly affectionate with his carers and loves nothing more than cuddling into them as they groom him”. He also continued to say that even after his traumatic start to life he is doing so well. Without a doubt, Diria has definitely found happiness once again thanks to his carers and this great establishment.
